C-27J 2005 U.S. Demo Tour Part 1 (May 10 - 25, 2005)

On May 10, 2005 GMAS' C-27J Spartan touched down at Davison Airfield, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia for its first stop of what will be a three week demo tour of the southeastern and central United States. This is the C-27J Spartan's 3 rd U.S. demo tour in support of the U.S. Army's Future Cargo Aircraft Program (FCA) since 2001.

The FCA program is a key component in the Army's transformation of its fixed wing fleet which calls for the procurement of a new fleet of cargo fixed wing aircraft. To support the future force, the FCA must be a multifunctional and interoperable aircraft, able to perform logistical re-supply, medevac, troop movement, airdrop operations, humanitarian assistance, and missions in support of Homeland Security.

The first phase of the demo tour is designed to demonstrate to the U.S. Army, Reserve and National Guard, the flexibility, performance and interoperability of the C-27J Spartan with existing U.S. military aviation assets. The aircraft will conduct flight and loading demonstrations along the way, with stops at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia; the Fixed Wing Army Aviation Training Center in West Virginia; Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; the Adjutants General Association of the United States annual conference in Omaha, Nebraska; Ft. Rucker, Alabama; and the 2005 Fixed-Wing Conference of the U.S. Army Operational Support Airlift Agency in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The C-27J Spartan arrived at Ft. Belvoir from its home base in Turin, Italy after completing a ferry flight across the Atlantic with stops in Iceland and Canada. With a maximum speed of 325 knots, a flight ceiling of 30,000 feet and a ferry range of 3,200 miles, the C-27J has the greatest range and speed of any medium tactical transport aircraft.
